William I. Mengel Sr., 89, formerly of Muhlenberg Township, passed away late Monday evening in his Hamburg residence with his loving wife, Marguerite S. (Huyett) Mengel, by his side. Born in Berkley, PA, he was the son of the late James L. Mengel Jr. and Mildred M. (Alspach) Mengel. Bill first worked at Cen-terport Elementary School where he taught Geography and Math, followed by enlisting into the U.S. Army where he began a lifelong career with the 193rd PA Air National Guard. After 36.5 years of service, he retired in 1979 as a Crew Chief Engineer.
He was a member of Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, Tuckerton; a Scoutmaster for Troop 155, Tuckerton; and a Commander of the Muhlenberg VFW. Bill is also survived by two sons, William I. Mengel, Jr., and wife Loretta D. Mengel, Port Clinton, and Scott A. Mengel, Hamburg; one brother, James L. Mengel III of MN; and one sister, Margaret M. Hinkel of Riv-erview Park. There are also four grandchildren: Courtney, Matt, Ben and Laura Mengel. Funeral Services will be Friday, May 27, 2011, at 11 a.m. in Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, 170 Tuckerton Rd., Reading, PA 19605. Burial to follow in the adjoining cemetery. There will be a public viewing from 10 a.m. until service time in the church. Family requests contributions be made to the memorial fund of his church at the above address.

Passing of MG (Ret) Gerald T. Sajer
It is with deep regret we inform you of the passing of Major General (Retired) Gerald T. Sajer. General Sajer passed away 14 May 2011 at the age of 83.
General Sajer was the 47th Adjutant General of the Pennsylvania National Guard from January 1987 through April 1995. As Adjutant General, he was responsible for the command and control of 24,000 Soldiers and Airmen assigned to the National Guard units of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He was responsible for providing trained and equipped unites capable of performing their war-time missions and for providing military support to civil authorities in responding to man-made and natural disasters. MG Sajer worked tirelessly to improve a wide variety of services and processes for our Guardsmen. His efforts leave a profound legacy and continue to have a positive impat on the lives of countless Soldiers, Airmen, Veterans, and Families.
MG Sajer served 49 years in uniform. After his retirement, he returned to his private law practice and remained a prolific author of military histories, legislative proposals and position papers. His advice, counsel and guidance was invaluable for several generations of leaders.
