Confusion about registered users and email subscribers

Hi All,

Since the recent updates some members are confused about how the system works. If you subscribed via email you are NOT a Registered User. You only need to Register for two reasons.

1. You want to contribute articles and posts to the website.

2. You are web savvy and you want to control what categories you receive email notices about.

For most of our membership simply subscribing by email is what you are looking for.

New Site Feature

Today I added a Mobile Bookmark feature titled Page/Post QR Code. The QR Code is auto generated for each Page or Post. I use this on my EverythingOuterBanks.com website and call it a Mobile Beach Bag. The idea is the same. If you have a Smart Phone and downloaded a QR Code reader like ScanLife to your Smart Phone you can bookmark any page or post to your Smart Phone.

Just scan the QR Code from your computer screen to save the page or post to your mobile device. You can share a post with a family member or friend from your phone, bookmark an event location, time or day etc. How you use this is up to you.

PS Our site is and has been Mobile Compliant. You will see an easy to read mobile view “automagically” when you view the site on a mobile device. You can put the site into standard view at the bottom of the mobile page, Viewing the mobile site in landscape mode is best. I may install our Iphone App system that works with all smart phones in the future. That is time consuming so it will have to wait. For now automatic mobile view will have to do.

Security Updates

We recently had to disable a plugin that was interfering with members logging in. I have replaced the faulty plugin with a new set of security features. The old system had prevented over 23,000 attempts  against our site from malicious agents trying to register. I cannot go into all the security tools we use at that makes it easier for hackers to break in.  From now on Registration will be done manually for new users.

As most of you know the Pentagon and others cannot keep hackers completely out. The same is true here but I’m doing the very best I can. From time to time legitimate visitors may be turned away. Most of the time your  browser will tell you why you are being turned away. For example, our security system may know that you have a virus on your machine when you do not. Many of the attempts against websites are by unsuspecting users that have been infected.

You may also be asked to leave a message etc in your browser. These messages are automated and are meant to throw off robotic and denial of service attacks. You may experience  being thrown back to the home page when you click a Page or Post link. This is also a security feature to stop hackers and unwittingly infected users.

So, what should you do if you are legitimate and you are being blocked?

Turn off anything on your computer that hides your identity and try again after you delete your browser cache.

Run a virus scan if our website page tells you to do so.

Update your browser if our admin area tells you to do after logging in.

If you get locked out for too many log in attempts come back in an hour or two and try again.

If all this fails reply to this email address with your IP address, Phone number and description of your particular issue. You can find your IP address by going to WhatIsMyIP.com.

Mike Kelly

Change of Command

The Change of Command ceremony for the 193rd Special Operations Wing will take place on 12 February 2012 at 1400. Col Jerry Otterbein will accept Command from Brig Gen Weller. Maj Gen Sischo will be the presiding officer.

Location of Ceremony for Air Station 3 will be the Fuel Cell.

Add 193rd Posts to your Facebook account with one click

Did you know you can now add any post or page from this site to Facebook with one click? Not just Facebook but LinkedIn and nearly 100 other Social Media services. No need to type it up, just click and add to Facebook etc. You just need to be logged into your Facebook account.  Look for the Share Link on the bottom right side of the page that comes up when you click the link to add the Post or Page to your Facebook account.

You all remember when MySpace was big and  fell by the wayside. One day Facebook will likely be replaced. We’re ready for nearly every social media type that is available or will be in the future.

Just Mouse over the Share / Save icon  . To see more go to the bottom of the pop up layer and click the down arrow to see everything!

Hope to see you all again one day if I ever return from the beach! PS If you’re dropping by the Outer Banks check out our latest directory EverythingOuterBanks.com before you come or after you arrive. We’re installing our Iphone App next week.
