I am happy to report that your Association is well and functioning. We have been active in supporting Wing activities, and your fellow airmen. The Assistance Fund, MWR contributions, and the Scholarship program are some of the examples of our impact in helping the Wing.

There has been a new need however that I would like to bring to your attention. The 193rd Family Readiness Group is looking for men and women to help them in their various activities. They are looking for volunteers to join the group, meetings are held on Saturday of Drill weekends. You could be involved in fundraising, Party planning, contacting deployed members family’s, or providing hands on assistance at family day and Christmas party’s. They are also looking for individuals who can help in staffing departure and return events for Wing deployments. This is a great way to stay in touch with the Wing, and maybe rekindling some old friendships. See more information in the next block below and please contact the Airmen and Family readiness Office for more information.

As many of you know, We also hosted our Annual Business meeting this past April UTA. Attendance was better than in some previous year. It was good to see some of our retiree’s. We started with a luncheon over at the club, a Base tour and a briefing. Followed by the meeting at 1500 in which we went over the Associations activities, with a detailed look at our how we function. Please mark your calendars for next April and plan on joining us. We would be glad to have you.

The Association in cooperation with the Airmen’s Council is putting together a fundraising effort that will provide clothing, t-shirts, hats, polo’s etc. as well as coins, mugs and other items for unit consumption. Some inventories will be available at the Base, and other can be ordered for future delivery. Please see a Board of Director or an Airmen from the Council.

We have made some updates to our website. It is now partially restricted to our members. The public can only read a highlight of each post. Only our registered members can sign in and read the entire post. This is also how we want to make contacting each other possible. There is a basic profile for members who have registered on the website. Now each member needs to update their own profile adding the information they want to be available to our other members. You also have the option to hide some information you don’t want available to other members. Please go in and update your profile making it easier for our other members to contact you or click Register under the Login link at the top.

The cash awards were given to the charity chosen by the child. Hayden Panzar, and Rebecca Boisvert received the $250 level award. Kaylee Kistler and Aidyn Gingrich received the $100 level award. Liliana Price, and Nicholas Odell received the $50 level award. Aiydan Gingrich, Hayden Panzar and Liliana Price also received a unit coin at the end of school year’s award ceremonies in front of their peers. The other award recipients will receive their award coins at an upcoming awards program. Every nomination received a certificate of achievement.

To be eligible for nomination the child must be a 193rd SOW military minor dependent between the ages of 8 and 18 who has proven leadership accomplishments, extracurricular activities, and resil-iency. The nominees prepared an essay on the topic of what the concept “pay it forward” means to them.

The award is supported by 193 SOW Enlisted Council and 193 SOW Association, who feel honored to support our military children who want to make a positive difference for others. Spark the change, make a difference for others, and respect the ripple!

We are currently looking for an enlisted military member who can take over this program. This person will receive guidance and assistance from Pam and the Association.

The 193rd SOW Association (Combined Federal Campaign #45961) is a 501(c)(3) federally recognized nonprofit organization. Your contributions help support Association initiatives. All donations are tax deductible.  In most cases contributions made through the United Way Program are anonymous. So we want to take a moment to say THANK YOU! to all those who choose to make those donations. Our only regret is that we can not thank you personally. Without you we could not do much of what we are currently doing.

One way to get more detailed information about what the Association does is to attend monthly meetings. Meetings are usually held the first Thursday of the month in the Commander’s Conference Room in Middletown at 1700. Meetings normally last 1 to 1.5 hours. After meetings we normally head out to the Brownstone Restaurant for more relaxed discussion and fellowship. Stay tuned to the website for changes.

For those of you who cannot attend we do try to keep you up to date with Postal Mail & Email Newsletters. Some information is sensitive so we cannot go into detail. For example, financial requests from individuals in need. Meeting Minutes will now be scrubbed and posted to the website.

Notifying members about promotions, deaths, etc.:

We try to post obituary information on the website when we receive it. We then send it out using our email Newsletter. We rely on word of mouth for deaths. You can notify us by filling out the Contact form on the website. Promotions are listed in the Scope and is normally available online. Again, you must have a login to see more than a simple excerpt of a posted item.

More info about wing events, more activities we can be involved with at the wing and an informative newsletter:

Information is now hard to get directly from the Wing due to new policies about using email to share such information. Family Day is now Squadron by Squadron. Members can help by notifying us. Again, please use the Contact form on the website. See related below.

Social gatherings for all, informative briefings at the wing. Increase husband/wife participation in activities. Provide more opportunities to socialize with other members:

Social gatherings have been attempted with little success. However, there are some regular social gatherings that might interest folks. I don’t see why spouses could not attend. There are 2 breakfasts and 1 lunch every month. This is not an Association gathering but is open to all. If you are interested contact Dennis aka Fuzzy Walborn dwalborn@193sow.org to get more information.

If you would like to start a new social group like a bowling, golf or pool league then let us know through the Contact page on the website. We will include your contact information in an Email Newsletter and you can see if others are interested. As a matter of fact, if you have any ideas about social gatherings etc let us know. We can reach out to our membership through email regarding just about anything.

Retirement Processes:

Previously we had VA and retirement specialists attend one of our meetings, but the attendance was poor. The majority of the board members are retired and would be happy to talk to anyone about their retirement experiences and even disability claim processes.

Job offers from members:

If you are a company owner or hiring agent feel free to contact us for posting a Job item. If you are seeking employment send us your skills /Résumé and contact information. Email me with attachments mike@lubyg.com. We can email that out to the membership. Even if they are not hiring agents fellow members may be able to get you a lead. Networking through the membership is a great idea.

I am the webmaster for the 193rd Association and started several marketing and technology businesses. Additionally I owned a mortgage company until the housing market collapse. Starting your own business is a great way to make a living these days. It is not easy but I believe many military people have the proper training and personality to make it work. Feel free to email me mike@lubyg.com or call my personal cell 717.215.0238 to talk to me directly about technology & marketing or your business ideas.

I have also worked with SCORE. This nonprofit organization has a Veterans program. It is free and there are hundreds of Chapters U.S. wide. I highly recommend talking to SCORE, myself or other business owners before heading down this road. It can be profitable but nothing in life is easy. The plans were designed by Don Smith, a model aircraft builder. The wing span is 134 inches, the fuselage is 121 inches and it weighs in around 50 pounds. Retired Lt Col George Meyer said “I got the idea of doing the Connie model late in 2011. After searching online for photos and getting some from the 193rd SOW Public Affairs office the construction plans started to come together. With the help of Robert “Bob” Krehling, an expert model airplane builder, friend and fellow member of a local flying club we started the building of the airplane.”

It was built in Meyer’s home in two sections, the fuselage and wing, in order to be moved out of his house once finished and ready to fly. His initial intention was to make a flying model that could be flown on the model aircraft grounds but after considering the time, effort and cost he reconsidered saying “I did not want to see it crash on its maiden flight.” The engines were fired up and it made a taxi check on his driveway where he took these photos.

Col John Dickinson, Commander of the 193rd SOW took notice of the Connie at the Harrisburg International Airport open house last year. After talking to George and Bob the plan to bring it to the 193rd SOW was hatched. Time, place and details of where it will be displayed are being worked out and a dedication ceremony will certainly take place for all to come and admire the work and effort put into this model.

The EC121 will have a place on base at Middletown which will be accessible for all to enjoy and help to tell the story of our proud history and heritage.

A project of this size and scope does not come without costs and Col Dickinson is asking all to consider making a donation to help cover the costs involved in the building of the Connie and to help with any costs that will be incurred with a display. If you would like to donate to the cause please send your donation payable to the 193rd SOW

Association at 81 Constellation Ct, #14, Middletown PA 17057. Attn: EC-121 Connie model project. If your dues are not current you will not get the membership card until you pay your dues. In the dues notices we also ask you to verify some of the information that we maintain on our members to make sure we have it right.

For our Life members we send out a similar letter saying hello and again to verify the data we have in your file. 1. Really like the eNewsletter. Save some money and take me of the mailing list. As a Life Member, I don’t need the dues reminder either.
    Thanks, Larry

  2. GOOD JOB MIKE LOVE THE CONNIE MODEL….PICS.
DID YOU KNOW OUR C121C 54-157 IS STILL FLYING FOR QANTAS AIRLINES IN ILLAWARRA AIRPORT AUSTRALIA

  3. That is awesome to find this type of information about an aircraft from the 193rd. It’s great that we have the technology to find this type of information.

  4. I repeat Larry Rutt’s comments. Really like the eNewsletter. Save some money and take me of the mailing list. As a Life Member, I don’t need the dues reminder either.

  5. Hi John, I had sent Larry a personal email relating to this. According to Randy Eckert it does not cost any more or less to send the paper newsletters. I too recommended removing paper for those who have email. The second reason they send these via snail mail is to make sure addresses are correct. The post office lets the Association know if the address is no longer valid or if the person left a forwarding address. I’m a technology person and would run things differently but I understand the old fashioned way of doing things allows them to keep records of physical addresses. If I were to make a follow on recommendation it would be to take life members who have email and remove them. I do not see the need to have a physical address for all our members. I do see the need to have a physical address for those who are annual dues paying members. I even tried to turn the Association on to using PayPal to collect dues. However, since some folks do not have the web and the people who are responsible for collecting the money are volunteers, it became too confusing for them. I hope that helps to clear things up. Thanks for your comment.
